About the account.

The WWF Koala Friendly Carbon Initiative Pilot 1 (KFCI-P1) is a collaborative venture between World Wide Fund for Nature - Australia (WWF-Au), Climate Friendly and private landholders in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. This pilot of the KFCI program (forming the basis for this AfN asset account) spans five separate properties totalling 575.24 ha, of which the Environmental Account covers 531.00 ha. Of the total account area, 125.01 ha is being revegetated with a specific species list to provide an increase in availability of koala food trees as well as habitat and climate refugia for this iconic species. The species list for revegetation will be generated using local knowledge of project areas, existing mapping and modelling of pre-clearing vegetation communities and comparison and cross-referencing with local context reference communities. Additionally, 43.9 ha of the total properties area will be excluded from the account as no management activities will be undertaken within those areas that are relevant to this account. Alongside the revegetation, efforts are being made at some properties to improve the quality of any existing koala habitat, and hopefully these efforts will be reflected in the Econd® for this account in the future.

The aim of KFCI-P1 is multi-faceted:

  • To extend, connect and improve high-quality, climate-resilient habitat for the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) in priority areas.

  • To support and encourage an increase in the population of koalas in the Northern Rivers region of NSW.

  • To demonstrate complementarity between environmental markets and productive landscape business diversification by showing how carbon with co-benefits can simultaneously provide alternative income streams and incentivise land-use change to support the recovery of threatened species.

The account will use measures of both koala habitat and koala population across all aggregation areas. The account has been stratified as a high accuracy level (formerly confidence) account; however, additional sampling has been undertaken to provide an opportunity for estimates of environmental condition to be made at an individual property level. The Econd®, however, will only be certified at the aggregation level.
