Significant outcomes.
Econd® scores for soil condition are relatively high considering the high degree of landscape alteration that is represented by open pastures with introduced species and low diversity. Soil pH and Electrical Conductivity (EC) are not likely to be substantially changed with the changed land use. The main impacts from changed land use include lower soil carbon and groundcover.
In spite of the land use history as a grazing property and likely past applications of phosphorus fertiliser, there is little trace of this in the low phosphorus result obtained by testing. The low phosphorus score brought the Pcond down as the tested value was below the reference range. However, the long-term aspiration of the landholder is to regenerate the land to more closely resemble past native landscapes. On that basis, future classification of the Assessment Unit may be changed to ‘Native Vegetation / Forestry’. This classification has a lower minimum threshold for phosphorus and is likely more attuned to future uses of the land. This would have the effect of increasing the Pcond score.
Current management aims to increase diverse native plantings, and grazing stock has been removed from the property. These changes will reduce pressure on groundcover and will assist in the sequestration of soil carbon over time. On this basis, a target of 10% increase in both Econd and Pcond, if achieved over the next five years, will reflect substantial improvement in soil condition across this property.
Limitations & disclosures.
The principal limitation of this account is the level of confidence in the expert assessment of the reference condition for soils of the Strzelecki association. The inherent fertility and depth of these soils resulted in their priority clearing and development from about 1875. No empirical data is available from earlier than the 1960’s when formal soil surveys commenced. By that time, almost 100 years of change had occurred. There is a small number of relatively undisturbed sites in the local area. Such sites include the Pioneer Reserve in Kongwak. Soil sampling in this reserve may provide useful reference data for future refinement of existing Econd® values.
