About the Environmental Account.
Wallaby Wetlands Carbon Project is a 16 year, $3.3 million collaboration between the Queensland Government and CO2 Australia Pty Ltd to deliver improvement in the biodiversity levels, connectivity between remnant native vegetation, and water quality entering the local waterways, with added socio-economic benefits of employment and income generation for the region. The Wallaby Wetlands Carbon Project is being undertaken on land owned by and Humane World for Animals (HWA) Australia, establishing approximately 60.3 ha of previously cleared sugar cane land. The Wallaby Wetlands property is located within the Wet Tropics Bioregion or northern Australia, a globally significant biodiversity hotspot supporting more than 4,000 plant species, including over 700 endemic species. The environmental planting will re-establish tropical rainforest and dry sclerophyll forest communities, improving landscape connectivity with the adjacent Kuranda National Park and Kuranda West Forest Reserve. The revegetation will also provide habitat for a range of threatened species known or predicted to occur within the surrounding landscape, including the southern cassowary, red goshawk, northern quoll, northern greater glider, spot-tailed quoll and northern bettong, together with threatened flora such as orange tamarind (Toechima pterocarpum) and Sankowskya stipularis.
