About the
Environmental Account.
Eliwana Mine is an iron ore mining operation located in Nanutarra, Western Australia, 140 km west of our Solomon site on Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura Country. Commencing operations in 2020, Eliwana produces 30-31 million tonnes per annum of iron ore, transported 428 km by rail to Herb Elliott Port in Port Hedland, supported by a workforce of over 1,000 people. Eliwana is set to become the first of Fortescue’s mine sites to fully transition away from fossil fuels, marking a significant milestone in our decarbonisation journey. With considerable investment in renewable energy infrastructure, this site stands at the forefront of the path to ‘Real Zero’.
The Environmental Account is situated within the project approval boundary at Eliwana Mine, encompassing both impacted and non-impacted areas across a semi-arid landscape of broad plains, low hills, and ephemeral drainage systems typical of the Pilbara bioregion. Vegetation within the account includes a mosaic of spinifex grasslands, Acacia shrublands, and open Eucalyptus woodlands, providing habitat for a range of native flora and fauna adapted to arid and variable climatic conditions. As a pilot application within Fortescue-managed tenements, this project-scale Environmental Account focuses on the conservation and management of relatively undisturbed areas adjacent to mining operations.

About the Environmental Account Holder.
Fortescue Ltd is one of Australia's largest iron ore producers, headquartered in Perth, Western Australia. The company has grown to become a major force in the global resources sector, operating large-scale mining operations in the Pilbara region.
In recent years, Fortescue has expanded its focus beyond iron ore, investing heavily in green energy and technology. Central to this is its ‘Real Zero’ initiative, which targets the elimination of fossil fuels from its own operations by 2030, without relying on carbon offsets. The company is pursuing goals around green hydrogen, renewable energy and decarbonisation, both to reduce its own emissions and to develop clean energy solutions for industries worldwide.
