WWF-Australia is currently in the process of developing an Environmental Account to submit for certification.
About the account.
This Environmental Account will track changes in the condition of koala habitat and koala populations at one of the individual projects associated with the WWF Koala Friendly Carbon Initiative Pilot 2 (KFCI-P2). This Initiative is a collaborative venture between World Wide Fund for Nature - Australia (WWF-Au), Climate Friendly, and private landholders in regional NSW.
The project area for this Environmental Account covers 41.99 ha within a property in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Of the total account area, 30.4 ha is being revegetated with a specific species list to provide an increase in availability of koala food trees as well as habitat and climate refugia for this iconic species. The species list for revegetation will be generated using local knowledge of project areas, existing mapping and modelling of pre-clearing vegetation communities, and comparison and cross-referencing with local context reference communities that are representative of the original forest types.
The aim of KFCI-P2 is multi-faceted:
To extend, connect, and improve high-quality, climate-resilient habitat for the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) in priority areas.
To support and encourage an increase in the population of koalas in the Northern Rivers region of NSW.
To deliver a carbon project using the Environmental Planting Method under the Australian Carbon Credit Scheme, with the goal of restoring over 30 hectares of high-value koala habitat while supporting long-term income generation for landholders. Any carbon credits generated are issued independently under the relevant carbon standard and have not been assessed against the Accounting for Nature® Carbon Linking Rules
