About the
Environmental Account.
In 2022 Taronga publicly launched its Taronga Habitat Positive program, a 5,000 ha restoration initiative in critical Box-Gum Woodland habitat designed to create climate-resilient habitat for koalas and other threatened species in New South Wales. In 2025, Taronga acquired its first site “Sanctuary 1”. Taronga’s Habitat Positive program works in close consultation with First Nations communities and other stakeholders including government, conservation organisations, universities, and landholders to deliver habitat restoration and species recovery.
The Environmental Account managed under the Taronga Habitat Positive Program is currently a project scale account managed across two adjacent properties owned by Taronga Conservation Society Australia. The Accounting Area spans across approximately 1903 Ha of the total available area and is comprised of remnant habitat and regrowth areas to be managed for improvement, as well as Carbon Estimation Areas (CEAs) where restoration works will be undertaken through planting and other management activities.

About the Environmental Account Holder.
Taronga Conservation Society Australia (TCSA) is a New South Wales government agency established under the Zoological Parks Board Act (1973). Taronga operates Taronga Zoo in Sydney, which opened in 1916, and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, which opened in 1977. TCSA’s statutory role is to care for animals, manage its zoos, and contribute to conservation through research, education, wildlife health, and partnerships. Its vision is to secure a shared future for wildlife and people. This includes leading threatened species recovery programs, habitat protection and rehabilitation efforts, and engaging communities through education and visitor experiences. Alongside this, TCSA is committed to sustainability, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2030, and continues to build partnerships that extend its conservation impact nationally and globally.
