Gilgal Grazing Pty Ltd has registered Gilgal Environmental Plantings and is currently in the process of developing an Environmental Account to submit for certification.
About the account.
The account will be used to monitor the change in the vegetation assets through time due to the environmental planting project. The account includes 197 hectares that are to be planted in the threatened ecological community, White Box-Yellow Box-Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland. The planting will have an open canopy (20-50% cover), with a grassy ground layer, representative of the local grassy woodlands. The asset consists of an open paddock, which has been historically used for the grazing of native grasses by sheep and cattle. The change in vegetation condition will be measured using the Landcare Native Vegetation Monitoring method, which was developed for use by property managers. The account will focus on measuring changes in vegetation integrity, specifically in vegetation richness, structure and function. A number of representative permanent plots will be established within the account boundary, and monitoring undertaken by the land manager, in collaboration with Local Land Services.

About the Account Holder.
Gilgal Grazing oversees the operations on the Gilgal property, near Cootamundra, on the NSW South Western Slopes. Gilgal was purchased in late 2023 by the account holder, and is undergoing a transition from mixed farming to grazing. Grazing is closely managed on the property, with high intensity grazing for short periods of time, followed by long recovery periods. Ecological monitoring is undertaken to track the improvement in ecological condition on the property, and to inform the grazing planning. There is an active soil carbon project on the property, registered in 2024, which aims to increase the soil carbon levels through changes in grazing management. The area under the environmental account is an environmental planting project, and the account will be used to track improvements in environmental condition, as the planting is established.
Impact Ag Australia, under contract with the asset manager, is the operating partner for Gilgal Grazing. This includes management of the environmental plantings projects.
